Stochastic and Mathematical Analysis, Research, and Testing for Emotion

Turning emotional data into knowledge: mathematical models, immersive experiments and psychometric tools to understand—and improve—human well-being

Our mission

SMART Emotion Lab is an interdisciplinary research centre that investigates emotions through stochastic modelling, advanced psychometrics and computational neuroscience. We analyse how affective states emerge, fluctuate and self-regulate over time, transforming observation into scientific prediction. Our goal is to generate frontier knowledge and practical tools that foster well-being, early diagnosis and personalised interventions

Our mission

Research Lines

Using Markov chains, hidden-state models and large-scale simulations on longitudinal data to describe and predict individual emotion dynamics beyond static approaches.
Designing immersive VR, 360° video and experience-sampling paradigms to capture real-time emotional experience, from physiological patterns to self-reports.
Building high-fidelity tests and virtual environments to elicit dynamic emotions and assess flexibility, regulation and awareness in ecological settings

Our Team

Prof. Pietro Cipresso

Lab Director

Associate Professor of Psychometrics at the University of Turin and Chief Editor of Frontiers in Quantitative Psychology and Measurement; he merges virtual-reality paradigms with computational psychophysiology to model and predict emotional states.

PhD Candidate Francesca Borghesi

Lab Manager

Psychometrics PhD researcher whose work on stochastic models of affect dynamics and mental flexibility bridges advanced statistics and emotion science.

Research Fellow Gloria Simoncini

Young esearcher developing VR-based digital biomarkers and longitudinal methods to link moment-to-moment affect dynamics with mental-health outcomes.
